Cal Newport

Cal Newport was born on June 23, 1982. He completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College in 2004 and received a PhD in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2009 under Nancy Lynch. He was a postdoctoral associate in the MIT computer science department from 2009 to 2011. He is currently a computer science professor at Georgetown University. His work focuses on distributed algorithms in challenging networking scenarios and incorporates the study of communications systems in nature. In addition to his academic research, he writes about the intersection of digital technology and culture.

Newport is a New York Times bestselling author of eight books, including, most recently, A World Without Email, Digital Minimalism, and Deep Work. He's also the creator of The Time-Block Planner. His books have been published in over 35 languages and have been featured in many major publications, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Yorker, Washington Post, and Economist. He also started the Study Hacks Blog in 2007 where he writes about "how to perform productive, valuable and meaningful work in an increasingly distracted digital age". Likewise, he challenges the belief that participation in social media is important for career advancement (a rather unique stance in our society today). Interestingly, Newport coined the term "deep work" in his book Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World, and has popularized it since then through his YouTube channel and countless articles.

He defines deep work as studying for focused chunks of time without being distracted by email or social media.

He's also the proud father of three beautiful boys, and endeavors to put to practice what he preaches.
