Book Review - Execution #1
Discovery Shoppe Book Club comes up with two thought-provoking book reviews per month. These reviews give a good summary of our current read and also serve as a guide to potential readers. Read through for the first half of Execution.
Execution: Chapters 1-5
The book is divided into two main parts: The building blocks of execution and the three core processes of execution. It intelligently articulated the strategy of getting things done with real-life lessons of both failures and successes of organizations.
Reading through chapters 1-5, this stood out for us:
A leader or executive must know how to ask the right questions, have a robust dialogue to surface the realities of business, and identify the right people for a job.
The linking of strategy, operations and people is the role of the business leader, and to accomplish that critical mission, the leader must be meaningfully involved in those three elements - not micromanaging them but leading them to efficient execution.
"Leaders placed too much emphasis on what some call high-level strategy, ... and not enough on implementation." "Unless you translate big thoughts into concrete steps for action, they’re pointless."
"People think of execution as the tactical side of business. That's the first big mistake. Tactics are central to execution, but execution is not tactics. Execution is fundamental to strategy and has to shape it"
Overall, the book is a good read with practical real-life examples that are relatable. However, there are reiterations of concepts in the book. Irrespective of this, I'll give it a rating of 6/10 and certainly recommend it, particularly to people in managerial positions.
